CHICAGO, March 29, 2007

The McCormick Tribune Foundation’s commitment to investing in programs that improve civic health has resulted in the approval of $5 million to 28 nonprofit agencies throughout the nation. More than $2.7 million of that amount will be awarded to Chicago-area organizations. (A complete record of grants awarded is provided below).

“This quarter the McCormick Tribune Foundation continues to build partnerships, support basic needs and inspire civic responsibility,” said David L. Grange, president and chief executive officer of the McCormick Tribune Foundation. “As a Foundation, we aim to strengthen these critical components of civic health in order to create a better tomorrow for our children, communities and country.”

To help improve the quality of life for people with disabilities, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) will receive a $580,000 grant for its Transforming Medicine – Transforming Lives campaign. The grant will support the Healing Military Heroes Fund to benefit servicemen and women who have lost limbs from traumatic injuries sustained in conflict. Specifically, the fund supports RIC’s groundbreaking research of advanced bionic prosthetics and related clinical care, helping U.S. military amputees use advanced prosthetics while conducting performance testing to measure improvements over use of traditional prosthetics.

Continuing to address community needs, the McCormick Tribune Foundation, through its Los Angeles Times Family Fund, will grant a total of $516,000 to four nonprofits organizations in the Los Angeles area:

  • Salvation Army, Southern California Division
  • San Gabriel Valley YMCA
  • University Campus (UCLA UniCamp)
  • Young Men’s Christian Association of Metropolitan Los Angeles

These grants will provide 5,000 additional disadvantage children and youth access to summer camp programs, allowing them to escape the rigors of metropolitan living to learn teamwork and cooperation.

Additionally, the McCormick Tribune Foundation’s communities program awards a $162,000 grant to the Chicago Park District through its Cubs Care fund. The grant will support the Cubs Care Rookie League Baseball & Therapeutic Recreation programs. The programs introduce more than 10,000 children and adults with special needs to the game of baseball, while emphasizing teamwork, equal participation, and development.

To promote an informed and engaged citizenry, the Illinois Coalition of Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) will receive a $60,000 for its New American Democracy Project—a range of engagement programs for youth and new citizens in the Chicago area. The grant will allow ICIRR to expand its naturalization and voter registration program, increase volunteer recruitment and training, and improve its data management systems to better track and communicate with target populations.

The McCormick Tribune Foundation’s citizenship program also awards a $100,000 grant to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to develop its Civic Leadership Program during the 2007-2008 academic year. The Civic Leadership Program helps students understand key policy issues necessary to make informed and ethical decisions as future civic leaders.
